Overview

September - December 2013

The final project for my Machine Engineering (ENGS 76) course was to design and fabricate a RC robot. With a team of four, we designed our robot to collect, lift, and score different sized balls into tubes of varying diameters and heights to score points. Our team started by brainstorming concepts for various modules and then selected the most viable designs using design matrices and mockups.  We then moved to SolidWorks to finalize our design and used MATLAB to optimize specific components. In the Thayer Machine shop, we fabricated our robot out of our kit materials with CNC mills and lathes. Our Robot performed flawlessly and won the class contest.

My Contributions:

  • I served as technical lead on project.
  • I designed 4-bar linkage and used MATLAB to estimate the torque required from worm gear / pully to lift soccer ball.
  • I designed ~40% of CAD.
  • I machined ~40% of robot in Thayer machine shop.
