Pivotal

July 2018 - January 2023

Pivotal (formerly Opener) designs and manufactures a world leading personal eVTOL, Helix. Helix is a triple modular redundant, fully electric, carbon composite, vertical takeoff Part 103 ultralight aerial vehicle capable of flying a 220 lb operator 20+ miles.

I spent 4.5 years working on BlackFly, the pre-production version of Helix. Due to proprietary nature of my work, I am limited what I can share here. I am happy to share more with you in person or on a video call.

Lead Mechanical Engineer (August 2021 - January 2023)

  •  Technical lead for 8 engineers with 5 direct reports. Outlined project objectives, requirements, and timelines for team. Led brainstorming sessions and design reviews.

  • Led development and implementation of new product deployment workflow to streamline transition from design to MFG, increase transparency of distributed responsibilities, and improve team collaboration.

  • Leadership: Presented weekly to Senior Leadership on progress on all ME projects. Mentored directs on mechanical engineering, prototyping, sourcing, and vendor management. Developed training for CATIA and PDM systems. Worked cross-functionally across Firmware, EE, Quality, and MFG teams to bring projects to completion.

MEchanical Engineer (July 2018 - August 2021)

  • Propulsion: Supported design, testing, and production of Opener’s custom electric propulsion system. Led development of in-house stator core MFG process, achieving 5X cost reduction. Innovated Rotor MFG with novel magnet installation technique, reducing labor and cycle time by 50%. Champion of documentation best practices and spearhead introduction of travelers into Motor MFG documentation.

  • Design / Build / Test: Cradle to grave design and manufacturing lead for custom joystick, parachute deployment activation system, > 80% of 3D printed parts on vehicle, internal and customer charging systems, mounting and integration for sensors and electronic boards, cockpit design (seat, armrest, viewscreen mounting), and landing camera system.

  • Electromechanical: Mechanical liaison to EE team for layout, mounting, enclosure, MFG processes, and wire harness design. Developed all assembly processes, tooling, and documentation for Motor Controller MFG line.
