April 2015 - July 2016

I stayed involved with the Arctic Tern project after hours while completing my M.S. degree and helped STOL aviation design, fabricate, and flight test a new engine cowling. My hard work was rewarded by getting to help fly the Arctic Tern to EAA Oshkosh July 2016 in the back seat my team and I built.

Overview

  • I continued working on Arctic Tern after completing our senior capstone project because airplanes are cool!
  • We needed to fabricate a new engine cowling to address issues encountered with the first prototype cowling for the IO-390 engine.
  • I was responsible for designing a composite scoop for the engine's oil cooler.
  • I helped fly the plane from Lebanon, NH to EAA Oshkosh in July 2016.

Achievements

  • Designed and built oil cooler scoop plug, mold, and final carbon fiber part.
  • Designed internal sheetmetal mount for oil cooler.
  • Assisted composite fabrication of upper and lower cowling molds and final parts.
  • Supported flight testing of new engine cowling and oil cooler scoop.
