Magpie Aviation

May 2023 - November 2023

Magpie’s objective is to decarbonize aviation. The core technology enables zero-emission long range electric flight (+1000 miles) with today’s batteries through aerotowing and a clean sheet towplane design.

I got the opportunity to work on the next generation design Magpie’s core technology, the Active Hook system. Due to proprietary nature of my work, I am limited what I can share here. I am happy to share more with you in person or on a video call.

Check out Magpie’s website linked here.

Senior Mechanical Engineer (May 2023 - November 2023)

  • Led mechanical design of next generation of Active Hook - an autonomous aero-mechanical tow device designed to fly at speeds above 200 kts and carry a payload aircraft load of 19,000 lbs while weigh less than 10 lbs.

  • Active Hook development required multidisciplinary skills including: complex mold design, silicone intensifier composite manufacturing, FEA, bearing selection, servo sizing, 3D printing, aerodynamics, and design of 5 axis CNC Aluminum and Titanium components.

  • Supported complex CAD and surfacing of initial design of clean sheet Part 23 fully electric tow airplane.

  • Using SolidWorks and open source mesh software, reverse engineered a Pipistrel Taurus motor glider using iPhone

3D scans and hand measurements to support a custom electric conversion.

  • Developed and documented internal processes for CAD best practices and implemented a cost effective and scalable

    PDM solution.
